KING GEORGE II (ENGLAND). Manuscript Document signed: "George
R" as King, 2p (front and verso), 9½x16½. No place, no date. Boldly
signed above title. Document titled "Abstract of the Foregoing List". A list, by
names of unit commanders, of the "half pay per diem" stipulated for various
military units. Subtotals for the list are 9 pounds, 1 schilling, 10 pence on
the front and 16 pounds, 9 schillings, and no pence on verso. "Half-pay" was
the designation for military personnel retired and/or no longer on active
duty. The second in the Hannoverian line of British monarchs, George II
(b. 1683) reigned from 1727-1760. He was the last British king to command
troops in the field, a victory over the French at Dettingen in 1743. George
II's reign did much to consolidate the practice of constitutional
monarchy: a king deferring to a Cabinet responsible to Parliament. He also
presided over victories against France in India and North America, and also the
defeat at Culloden (1745) of the last Jacobite rebellion (on behalf of the
former Stuart rulers). Lightly soiled, mostly in left margin. Horizontal folds.
Overall, fine condition.
