KING GEORGE III. Manuscript DS: "George R." as King of England, 2p, 11x18¼, front and verso. No place, no date butstrong clear signature, socirca 1770s-1780s. Payment charges in four columns. Headed:"The Charge of His Majesty's Garrisons." Begins: "Berwick. The Pay of the Governor of the Town and Castle of Berwick upon Tweed and for the support of his Barony as Governor of the said Town." "Per diem £1 12s 101/2d." "For 365 days £600." In addition to Berwick, other areas listed are: Blackness Castle, Calshot Castle, Carlisle, Chester, Cinque Ports, Dunbarton Castle, Dartmouth and Edinburgh Castle. In addition to payment to the Governor, depending upon the location, there is payment listed for, among others, the Lieutenant Governor, Soldiers, Drummers, Surgeon and Gunsmith. George IIIreigned as King for almost 60 years, from 1760-1820. He wasthe last King of the American colonies.More than half of the Declaration of Independence concerns itself with specific complaints against King George III. He became blind and, in 1811, permanently deranged. The Regency Act of 1811 made George III's son Prince Regent from 1811 until his death in 1820 when the Prince Regent became King George IV. Chipped at left blank edge at horizontal fold, else fine and clean.
