KING GEORGE III and THE DUKE OF PORTLAND. Military Appointment signed: "George R.", 1p, 15¼x11¼. Our Court at Saint James, 1799 July 18. On vellum. In full: "George the Third by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, &c. To Our Trusty and WellbelovedLieutenant Colonel Christopher Jeffreyson Greeting: We reposing especial Trust and Confidence in Your Loyalty, Courage and good Conduct, do these Presents constitute and appoint you to be Captain of our Cambridge Regiment and Yeomanry, Cavalry.You are therefore to take the said Group into your Care and Charge, and duly to Exercise as well the Officers as Soldiers thereof in Arms and use your best Endeavours to keep them in good Order and Discipline, And We do hereby Command Them to obey You as their Captain and you are to observe and follow such Orders and Directions from Time to Time, as you shall receive from Us or any other your Superior Officer; according to the Rules and Discipline of War, in pursuance of the Trust hereby reposed in You." KING GEORGE III (1738-1820) signed this military appointment during his 60-year reign (1760-1820), during which time the British engaged in a number of wars. A year before this appointment, England stopped the insurrection of the United Irishmen, and their attempt to gain a complete separation. Sixteen years prior and 13 years hence, the British challenged the Americans, who first won their independence in the American Revolution (1775-1783) and then defended it in the War of 1812 (1812-1814). The 3rd DUKE OF PORTLAND, British Prime Minister (1783, 1807-1809) was Home Secretary (1794-1801) and Lord President of the Council (1801-1805). 1½-inch diameter red wax seal affixed near the King's signature, 1½x1¾-inch paper seal at mid-left portion. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "R" of the King's signature. Lightly soiled with minor ink transference. Stained at left edge. Overall, fine condition.
