KING GEORGE IV. Signature: "George R.", 4¾x2, irregularly cut from larger document. On vellum. Britain's King George IV (1762-1837), the eldest son of King George III, became Regent for his mentally ill father in 1811. While Regent, his choice of Cabinet helped conclude the Napoleonic Wars in 1815. War's end brought peace and depression when government demand for supplies ceased. Prices fell and thousands became unemployed, instigating the first labor unions. Upon his father's death in 1820, George ascended to the throne. His Age saw steps to curb the depression with the Corn Law (1815) and currency deflation (1821), and George IV also initiated penal code reform and abolition of the death penalty (1822). Known for this artistic tastes (his appreciation of the arts led to the development of Regent Street, Regent's Park and the restoration of Windsor Castle) and dissolute lifestyle, George had married a Catholic widow, but the marriage was deemed invalid under British law and the King was persuaded to take an official wife, his cousin, Caroline of Brunswick. The couple had one daughter, Princess Charlotte, who died in 1817, leaving no heirs. Therefore, upon the King's death in 1830, one of George's younger brothers became William IV. Lightly creased with folds, vertical folds at the "G" and "R". Ink lightly smudged at the "Geo", lightly spread at the upper portion and flourish of the "R". Ink "x" (unknown hand) at upper left corner. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine condition. Framed in the Gallery of History style: 23x19.
