SHIPBUILDING AND ENGINEERING WORKS of Govan on The Clyde, Scotland,
began building ships in 1890. It specialized in both naval vessels and fast transatlantic
liners. When his brother, King Edward VIII, abdicated, KING GEORGE VI (1895-1952)
acceded to the throne, reigning from 1936-1952. This succession was very important, since
Edward VIII was a considered sympathetic to Germany and to fascism. George VI, in striking
contrast, became as a staunch patriotic symbol during World War II, refusing to leave
London during the fierce German Blitzkrieg of 1940. He was succeeded by his daughter as
Queen Elizabeth II. QUEEN ELIZABETH (1900-2002), fondly referred to as “The Queen
Mother”, was Queen consort from 1936 to 1952. She passed away weeks after the death of
her youngest daughter Princess Margaret. LADY PATRICIA RAMSAY (born Princess
Patricia of Connaught) was a member of the British royal family until she relinquished her
royal title when marrying SIR ALEXANDER RAMSAY, a Royal Navy officer who became
Chief of Naval Air Services. KING OLAV V of Norway was known as Folkekongen ("The
People's King"). He excelled at sports and helped his country's team win the gold medal for
sailing in the 1928 Olympic Games. VIJAYA LAKSHMI PANDIT was an Indian diplomat
and politician, the aunt of Indira Gandhi and the grand-aunt of Rajiv Gandhi, and the first
Indian woman to hold a Cabinet post. Cover is lightly worn. Signature page lightly soiled. 1
page has come loose from the binding, other pages are lightly soiled, some have minor stains.
Otherwise, fine condition. Accompanied by unsigned 12x9¾ b/w photograph of Queen
Elizabeth. Lightly creased, chipped at left edge. Photographer's stamp on verso does not show
