To M. de Fourquevaux, sending him greetings of the King, the Queen and himself and expressing his wishes for a meeting in the near future. BARON DE FOURQUEVAUX was French Ambassador to Spain. Henry aided his mother, Catherine de Médicis, in plotting the Massacre of St. Bartholomew on August 24, 1572, just five months after this letter was written. Two years later, his brother, King Charles IX, died and Henry acceded to the throne. After his mother's death in 1589, King Henry III was murdered by a monk. Fragile. Worn. Edges tattered. Folds do not touch signature but had separated in blank areas and were inexpertly repaired on verso with tape. Lightly stained in blank areas. Pencil notes on verso (unknown hand, no show through).
