KING LOUIS XII
Letter signed by the king as "Louis" written in 1508
Manuscript Document Signed: "Louis". 1p, 15½x8. August 10, 1508. In Old French, not yet
translated. King Louis XII (1462-1515) reigned from 1498-1515. He ascended to the
throne when King Charles VIII died childless. Louis had the Pope annul his marriage to
Jeanne, the daughter of King Louis XI, so that he could marry Charles' widow, Queen
Anne de Bretagne to securely link her region of Brittany to Louis' kingdom of France.
After her death in 1514, the 52-year-old King married 18-year-old Mary Tudor, sister of King
Henry VIII of England; Louis XII died less than three months later. During his reign, King
Louis XII introduced reforms in the judicial system and reduced taxes. These reforms and
his caring nature earned him the epithet "Father of the People". Lightly soiled, stained and
creased. Folded once vertically, and once horizontally. Heavily toned. Paper loss at upper
right-hand corner. Bottom edge irregular. Otherwise, fine condition.
