KING VIDOR, CO-SIGNED BY: THE MERRY MACS
The famed film director, and four members of the singing group, sign this note to TV/radio host George Sanders
Autograph Note signed: "To George -/Salute!/King Vidor" and on verso "'The Merry Macs' were here./Nov. 28th 1955/Judd McMichael", "Ted McMichael", "Dick Baldwin", "Louanne Hogan", 3½x8.
KING WALLACE VIDOR (1894-1982) was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Director in 1929 (The Crowd), 1930 (Hallelujah), 1932 (The Champ), 1939 (The Citadel) and 1957 (War and Peace). Vidor, who directed 64 films between 1913 (Hurricane in Galveston) and 1959 (Solomon and Sheba), returned in 1980 to helm The Metaphor. He also wrote several screenplays and produced films, and Vidor also was seen on the big screen in four films. THE MERRY MACS were a popular close harmony pop ensemble from the 1920s to the 1960s. Their hit tunes included the novelty song "Mairzy Doats", and "Sentimental Journey." Their style influenced later groups, including the Modernaires. Tenor JUDD McMICHAEL (1906-1989) and baritone TED McMICHAEL (1908-2001) were founding members, along with their brother Joe, killed during World War II. DICK BALDWIN (1911-1996) was the second in a series of replacements for Joe McMichael. LOUANNE HOGAN (1918-2006) sang with the Merry Macs on one album in the 1950s. She also sang with other groups, and her voice was used for several film actresses who couldn't sing: she sang for Jeannie Craine in State Fair (1945) and hummed for Sophia Loren in Desire Under the Elms (1958). George Sanders was a Portland radio and television interview host who collected autographs from his guests. Toned at edges. Right edge frayed from binding. Multiple minor notches at edges. Corners lightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
