KINGSLEY AMIS
Handwritten letter to a teacher
Autograph Letter signed: "Kingsley Amis", 1 page, 3½x5¼.
Lemmons, Hadley Common, Barnet, Hertfordshire [England], 1973 January
29. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr Pruitt", in full: "I
am honored by your request, and send you my autograph twice over, as signature
to this letter and along with a brief message to your students. [Second item
not included.] Yours sincerely". English novelist, poet, critic and
teacher Kingsley Amis (1922-1995) began writing realistic novels about
everyday English life (Lucky Jim, 1954; Take a Girl Like You,1960)
. His later works moved in less conventional directions, such as his
metaphysical ghost story, The Green Man (1976); science fiction, The
Alteration (1976); and even a James Bond novelization (Colonel Sun,
1968). Renowned for his heavy drinking and womanizing, Amis moved across the
political spectrum from youthful communist to middle-aged conservative, an
evolution he explained in "Why Lucky Jim Turned Right" (1967). Fine
condition.
