KINGSLEY AMIS
The English author explains in a typed letter, "I do not send photographs of myself to people I have never met."
Typed Letter signed: "Kingsley Amis", 1 page, 5¾x8. London, 1987 October 29. On personal letterhead to "Dear Mr. Sussman". In full: "Thank you very much for your letter. I'm afraid I do not send photographs of myself to people I have never met. However, I enclose herewith your slips of paper duly autographed. [Additional items not included.] With the best of luck, Yours sincerely". English novelist, poet, critic and teacher Kingsley Amis (1922-1995) began writing realistic novels about everyday English life (Lucky Jim, 1954; Take a Girl Like You,1960) . His later works moved in less conventional directions, such as his metaphysical ghost story, The Green Man (1976); science fiction, The Alteration (1976); and even a James Bond novelization (Colonel Sun, 1968). Renowned for his heavy drinking and womanizing, Amis moved across the political spectrum from youthful communist to middle-aged conservative, an evolution he explained in "Why Lucky Jim Turned Right" (1967). Light folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
