Douglas (1916-2020), considered by many to be the epitome of the Hollywood hard man,
made his film debut in The Strange Love of Martha Ivers in 1946. Three years later, he
received his first Academy Award nomination for Champion (1949). Douglas, who
received two other Oscar nominations, for The Bad and the Beautiful(1952) and Lust for
Life (1956), both directed by Vincente Minnelli, also appeared in Spartacus (1960), Lonely
Are the Brave (1962), The List of Adrian Messenger (1963), Seven Days in May (1964), In
Harm's Way (1965) and numerous other feature and made for television films. In addition to
his film work, which was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the American
Film Institute in 1991 and an honorary Oscar by the Academy in 1995, Douglas has
published two novels and an autobiography, The Ragman's Son (1988). Though he
continued to appear in films, by the '80s Douglas began volunteering much of his time to
civic duties. Since 1963, he had worked as a Goodwill Ambassador and, in 1981, his many
contributions earned him the highest civilian award given in the U.S. - the Presidential
Medal of Freedom. Fine condition.
