He scored his first aerial victory on Sept. 4, 1940 over Kent, England, during the Battle of Britain, and went on to shoot down a total of 112 planes in 700 missions over Europe, Africa and the Soviet Union. Engine failure forced Bühlingen to land in Soviet territory in 1945, and he was held as a POW by the Soviet Union until 1950. He was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. Bomber pilots like BERNHARD JOPE (1914-1995) usually don't find fame during wartime. That's usually reserved for the the fighter pilots. But Jope, who was with the German Luftwaffe from 1935 to 1945, made his mark in two separate attacks. Jope was assigned to attack merchant ships and direct U-boats in the Atlantic in 1940. One of these ships was the troop transport RMS Empress of Britain. He damaged her on Oct. 26, 1940 with two bombs from his Focke-Wulf Fw 200 Condor; she was later sunk by U-32. Later in the war, after Italy signed an armistice with the Allies, Jope led 11 Dornier 217 in an attack on the Italian fleet before they could surrender to the Allies in Malta. The Dorniers attacked the Italian ships with Fritz X radio-controlled bombs, sinking the battleship Roma and damaging the Italia. He was captured by the Allies near the end of the war but released in 1946 and became a pilot for Lufthansa. Jope was awarded the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves. HELMUT HAUGK (1914-1992) was a Luftwaffe pilot during World War II. He had 18 aerial victories in 440 missions in the twin-engine Messerschmitt Bf100 destroyer fighter. Haugk was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. FRITZ POCKRANDT was commander of the Luftwaffe bomber wing Kampfgeschwader 53 from March 31, 1943 to April 21, 1945, when the wing was disbanded. The wing was named "Legion Condor" after the Condor Legion, a group of German Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe soldiers who fought with the Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War. Lightly toned. Corners gently worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
