Free Frank signed "L F S Foster", 5x3, addressed in his hand: "Mrs. C.R.P. Rodgers/Newport/R.I.", LaFayette Sabine Foster (1806-1880), school headmaster, lawyer, and newspaper editor, served as Speaker of the Connecticut House of Representatives and ran unsuccessfully for Governor twice before winning election to the US Senate as a Republican (1855-1867). He was President Pro-Tempore of the Senate from March 7, 1865 to March 2, 1867, and, in this office, was next in line to the Presidency for almost two years following Lincoln's death on April 15, 1865. He was Associate Justice of the Connecticut Supreme Court (1870-1876). Slight tear from flap at upper center touching postmark, lightly soiled and creased.
