ANTONIA FRASER, HUGH FRASER, and NICOLAS BENTLEY
The celebrated British author and her MP husband sign their names in 1973, shortly before Antonia Fraser left her husband to live with actor Harold Pinter. Also bears two signatures from author and illustrator Nicolas Bentley. Extremely rare!
Signature: "To my Victor Croxford:/with all good wishes/f rom Hugh Frasier", "Antonia Frasier", "NB", "Nicolas/Bentley", 7¼x9½. British author Lady Antonia Fraser (b. 1932) the daughter of eminent English writers the Earl and Countess of Longford, is known for her historical works, which include Mary, Queen of Scots (1969), Cromwell, Our Chief of Men (1973) and Marie Antoinette: The Journey (2002). She has also written a series of detective stories featuring Jemima Shore. A Roman Catholic, Lady Fraser caused a scandal in 1977 when she left her husband for playwright Harold Pinter, whom she married in 1980. HUGH FRASER (1918-1984) was a British politician, first elected to Parliament in 1945. He served as a MP continuously until his death in 1984. Outside of his political career, Fraser is best known for his publicized divorce from author Antonia Fraser in 1980. English author and illustrator NICOLAS BENTLEY (1907-1978), the godson of G. K. Chesterton, began in commercial advertising for Shell and other companies, but found the work disagreeable, and shifted to book illustration, starting with Hillaire Belloc's New Cautionary Tales (1930). Bentley illustrated over 70 books, the most beloved of which was probably T. S. Elliot's Ole Possum's Book of Practical Cats (1939, the basis for the Andrew Lloyd Webber musical Cats). Bentley also wrote and illustrated books of his own. Notable among these were The White Liar's Engagement Book and Golden Sovereigns - and Some of Lesser Value -from Boadicea to Elizabeth II. He also published an autobiography. Several unsigned newspaper and book clippings affixed. Ink and pencil notes from collector. Light surface creases. Irregular edges. Notches on right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
