LANGSTON HUGHES
The Harlem Renaissance poet signs a contract authorizing use of his autobiography I Wonder as I Wander
Document signed: "Langston Hughes" in ink, 2p, 8½x14. New York, 1957 December 30. Contract between Hughes and Jacobo Huchnik, Editor, Florida 336, Buenos Aires, Argentina, regarding the use of Hughes' autobiography, I Wonder as I Wander. Also signed: "Jacobo Huchnik" as Editor and "Eulah C. Pharr" as Witness. I Wonder as I Wander (1956) was the second autobiography of Hughes, who captured the Black experience in jazz and blues songs and 30 plays and librettos, including Mulatto (1935), Soul Gone Home (1937) and Black Nativity (1961). His other works include the poem "The Weary Blues" (1926), the novel Not Without Laughter (1930) and his first autobiography, The Big Sea (1940). In 1960, the NAACP awarded the Springarn Medal to Hughes, naming him "Poet-laureate of the Negro Race". In April 1961, Hughes, who devoted 40 years to the advancement of his race, was elected to the prestigious National Institute of Arts and Letters. Tape remnant at mid-right margin of first page lightly shows through at blank area on signature page. Light show through of print. Slightly frayed at top and right edges. Overall, fine condition.
