LARRY ADLER, CO-SIGNED BY: MARGERY HARTNETT, TIM HARTNET, GEORGE FAULKNER
Adler dated and signed this page "From one Gus Edwards kiddie to another" and with a stick figure doodle in 1943. Also signed by six other signers.
Signatures: "From one Gus Edwards kiddie to another -/bravo!/Larry Adler/12/23/43", "Sincerely/Margaret [illegible] Hartnett,", "Tim V Hartnett Jr." and, on verso, "It was the Ile de [illegible] Time 1937 - George Faulkner". Adler added a stick figure doodle to the end of his signature. Plus three other unidentified signatures. 9¼x3¾, on heavy paper. ADLER (1914-2001, born Lawrence Cecil Adler in Baltimore, Maryland) was widely acknowledged as the world's best harmonica player and brought new credibility to the instrument. Starting humbly in vaudeville, Adler moved on to movie roles, beginning with Many Happy Returns (1934). He entertained troops during World War II. Adler performed works by Bach and Vivaldi and even inspired works to be written for his instrument by major composers, Vaughan Williams and others. On his 80th birthday, he released an album of songs by George Gershwin. Adler was unfairly blacklisted in the US during the McCarthy era, but attracted a large following in Europe. Reportedly, his fan club numbered 300,000 members! FAULKNER, born in Vermont in 1903, was a writer who wrote an episode of Kraft Television Theatre (1953), The Elgin Hour (1955) and Star Tonight (1955), . Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Light show-through from Faulkner's side of page, which touches signatures. Random ink stains. Right edge ragged from previous binding. Soiled and lightly creased. Otherwise fine condition.
