LARRY BIRD
20x16 glossy of the Celtics hero clowning around with Magic Johnson at Bird's
retirement night.
Photograph signed: "Larry Bird". Color, 20x16. Johnson reveals a
Celtics jersey under his Los Angeles Lakers warm-up jacket. The Boston
Celtics forward was NBA Rookie in 1980, league Most Valuable Player in 1984,
1985 and 1986 and playoff MVP in 1984 and 1986. In the 1987-1988 season,
Bird was the first Boston Celtic ever to record a 40-20 game, with a
42-point, 20-rebound effort against Indiana. He averaged a career-high 29.9
points that year, falling just five points short of reaching 30 per game. After
897 games Bird retired with 21,791 points (24.3 points per game), along with
8,974 rebounds (10 per game.) and 5,695 assists (6.3 per game). During his
career he shot .496 from the floor and .886 from the free-throw line, ranking
fifth all-time in the latter category. Bird, who announced his retirement on
August 18, 1992, was NBA Coach of the Year in 1998 (Indiana Pacers). Arch
on-court rivals from their first meeting in the NCAA Championship game (1979),
Larry Bird and the Los Angeles Lakers' Earvin "Magic" Johnson became friends and
admirers as their teams battled in the 1980s. At Bird's retirement night in
the old Boston Garden, February 3, 1993, Johnson observed, "Larry, there will
never, ever be another Larry Bird." Fine condition.
