LARRY FRENCH 3½x5½ black and white picture postcard of the pitcher in Los Angeles Dodgers colors Photograph signed: "Larry French" in brown ink. B/w, 3½x5½. French (1907-1987) was a major league pitcher between 1929 and 1942, mostly with the Pittsburgh Pirates (1929-1934) and Chicago Cubs (1936-1941). An All-Star in 1940, French pitched his way to a career total of 40 shutouts, leading the National League in 1935 and 1936 with four each year. French placed in the NL's top 10 for ERA five times and for saves twice. He was also a workhorse, playing in over 40 games seven seasons in a row (1932-1938), starting in more than 30 games six seasons in a row (1930-1935), and pitching more than 200 innings nine seasons in a row (1930-1938). In all, he had a career record of 191-171 with a 3.44 ERA over 570 games with 1,187 strikeouts and 17 saves. He retired from baseball in 1969 as a captain. Ink is lightly smeared. Gently worn at edges. Pencil notations on verso in an unknown hand. Otherwise, fine condition.
