Larry Gelbart (1928-2009) wrote comedy dialogue for many of the masters,
including Bob Hope, Danny Thomas, Jack Paar, Red Buttons and Sid
Caesar. He wrote the pilot for the TV series M*A*S*H, and won
an Emmy as producer of the first four seasons (1972-1976). He wrote the
screenplays for film classics Oh, God! (1977) and Tootsie (1982),
gaining Oscar nominations for both. No stranger to Broadway, he co-wrote A
Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (1962), and was highly
critical of the subsequent film for revising his script. Gelbart could also
script drama, as in the film Barbarians at the Gate (1993). Fine
