HAGMAN, WHO IS STARRING AS J.R. EWING ON DALLAS, IS SENT THE BALANCE OF HIS COMPENSATION FOR HIS ROLE AS SAM IN THE 1982 MADE-FOR-TV MOVIE, DEADLY ENCOUNTER
LARRY HAGMAN. Typed DS: "Larry Hagman" as President of Majlar Productions, 1p, 8½x11. No place, 1982 September 15. On letterhead of EMI Television Programs, Inc. to Hagman in Malibu, California. Headed: "Re: Majlar Productions (f-s-o Larry Hagman)/'DEADLY ENCOUNTER' (aka 'American Eagle')". In full: "Enclose find our draft made payable to Majlar Productions in the amount of Three Thousand Three Hundred Thirty Three Dollars and Thirty Three Cents ($3,333.33). Pursuant to the phone conversations between E. Jamie Schloss and Jeff Kuklin, this payment represents the agreed upon balance of compensation for your acting services in the above-referenced program. Sincerely". Secretarily signed for Kathy Tannen for EMI. Deadly Encounter (which was also known as American Eagle and starred Hagman as Sam), was first aired on December 19, 1982. That year, Hagman was starring as J.R. Ewing on two TV series, Dallas and Knots Landing, and he also appeared as himself in the TV special, Night of 100 Stars. Stage, screen and television actor Larry Hagman (born in 1931), the son of actress Mary Martin, had received his most prominent acting assignment as eternally flustered astronaut Tony Nelson on the TV sitcom, I Dream of Jeannie, in 1965. After five years on Jeannie, he took a few film and TV-movie parts, co-starred with Donna Mills on the 1971 sitcom, The Good Life, co-starred with Lauren Bacall in the TV rendition of the Broadway musical, Applesauce, and acted in and directed the low-grade horror spoof, Beware! The Blob. In 1978, he first appeared in his best known role, John Ross "J.R." Ewing, on the nighttime serial, Dallas (1978-1990). During Dallas' run, Hagman was also seen in the role (1980-1982) on Knots Landing, a spin-off of the series, and he reprised the character in two made-for-TV films, Dallas: J.R. Returns (1996) and Dallas: War of the Ewings (1998). Hagman also narrated Dallas: The Early Years in 1986. In 1997, Hagman had recovered from a liver transplant sufficiently to make a television comeback as the Honorable Judge Luther Charbonnet in the critically acclaimed CBS series, Orleans. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Paper clip impressions and rust stains at upper left margin, Hagman's name written (unknown hand) in pencil to right of signature. Fine condition.
