LARRY HOLMES and EARNIE SHAVERS
Black and white image of the boxers trading blows during their 1979 bout
Photograph signed: "Larry Holmes" and "Earnie/Shavers" in blue ink. B/w, 8x10. On September 29, 1979, Larry Holmes and Earnie Shavers duked it out for 11 rounds, Holmes winning the match by way of knock out. Boxer LARRY HOLMES was heavyweight champion (WBC or IBF) from 1978-1985. He successfully defended his title 20 times before losing to Michael Spinks. Holmes returned from his first retirement in 1988 and was KO'd in the 4th round by champ Mike Tyson. He launched a second comeback in 1991 and fought and lost title bids against Evander Holyfield in 1992 and Oliver McCall in 1995. Holmes, who beat Eric "Butterbean" Esch in a one-fight comeback in 2002, has a pro record of 69-6, with 44 KOs. Professional boxer EARNIE SHAVERS (b. 1944) was a devastating one punch knockout artist. He wasn't overly quick or agile and didn't take a great punch, but he had the best one punch power in the history of boxing. It was just a matter of if he could get the punch home, which he usually did. Although he never held the title, he fought the likes of Muhammad Ali and Larry Holmes in the 70s and 80s. He was also known as "The Acorn Black Destroyer". Shavers retired in 1983 after retinal problems were discovered in his eyes. Fine condition.
