actress Laura Benanti (b. 1979) made her stage debut in a 1998 revival of
The Sound of Music, starting as a minor character (nun) and then winning
critical acclaim as a replacement Maria. Benanti won a Tony (Best Featured
Actress in a Musical) as mother Louise in Gypsy (2009). She has received
three other nominations to date for this coveted award: Swing! (1999),
Into the Woods (as Cinderella, 2002) and Woman on the Verge of a
Nervous Breakdown (2011). Her performances in Gypsy and
Breakdown won Drama Desk Awards. She has appeared in two films,
including Take the Lead (with Antonio Banderas, her stage co-star in
Nine, and made multiple appearances on TV's Eli Stone, Law
& Order: Special Victims Unit and most recently, Go On, but she
still loves musical theatre best: "I want to do this my whole life." Benanti has
been married since 2007 to actor Steve Pasquale. Fine
