Signature from the model and actress in blue ink, with performer Red
Skelton inscribing his name on the verso
Signatures: "Lauren Bacall" and inscribed on verso
"To Mary/Best of luck/always/Red Skelton", 4¼x2¾ album leaf. When model
LAUREN BACALL (1924-2014) graced the cover of "Harper's Bazaar" in 1943,
Mrs. Howard Hawks was impressed with what would come to be known as "The Look"
and she told her producer-director husband about the sultry beauty. From the
time Bacall made her Hollywood debut in Hawks' To Have and Have Not
(1944) with Humphrey Bogart, both film critics and moviegoers fell in love
with the beauty with the throaty voice. Lauded as the most sensational newcomer
of the year, Bacall found both fame and love, falling in love and marrying
Bogie, with whom she would star in three more films. RED SKELTON
(1913-1997) performed on radio, in television, films and on stage. He was also a
renowned oil painter of clowns, a designer of dishes and an expert at creating
bonsai trees. He also composed about 8,000 songs, including the theme for the
film Made in Paris (1966). Among the characters Skelton created and
popularized on his television series, which aired from 1951-1971, were Freddie
the Freeloader, Clem Kadiddlehopper, San Fernando Red, Junior the Mean
Widdle Kid and the seagulls Gertrude and Heathcliffe. Slightly soiled.
