LAURENCE IRVING The set designer and grandson of famed English actor Sir Henry Irving pens his name on this album leaf Signature: "Laurence Irving" in black ink, 4¼x3½. The grandson of eminent British actor Sir Henry Irving, Laurence Irving (1897-1988) was a set designer and art director. Following a period during which he studied painting techniques with Charles Ricketts and Charles Shannon, Irving began designing sets, first for theatrical productions and then for motion pictures. In 1928, he moved to Hollywood to serve as the art director for The Iron Mask (1929). After working on several other sets throughout the 1920s, Irving returned to the UK to contribute to Pygmalion (1938). Irving served in the Royal Air Force during World War II, after which he returned to designing movie sets. The multitalented Irving also wrote Henry Irving: The Actor and his World, a biography about the life of his grandfather. Stained and foxed throughout. Toned. Upper left-hand corner worn. Adhesive remnants from a previous mounting on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
