New York, 1958 April 22. On stationery of the Hotel Algonquin to Mrs. Frank
L. Hough, The Drama League of N.Y., Inc., New York City. In full:
"Thank you so much for your nice letter and I can't tell you how delighted I
am to know of the beautiful filling job that has been done to 'a hole in the
head'. I am so sorry I can't help you at all on the 29th as I have another
engagement. I wish you great happiness on the occasion." At the time he
signed this letter, Olivier was starring on Broadway as Archie Rice, a role for
which he would be nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Play, in The
Entertainer. The play, which ran from February 12, 1958-May 10, 1958,
was presented at the Royale Theatre, produced in part by Olivier's production
company. Laurence Olivier (1907-1989), Sir Laurence after 1947 and Lord
Laurence after 1970, has been called the greatest Shakespearean interpreter and
the greatest actor of his time. He won the 1948 Academy Award for Best Actor for
Hamlet, which also won Best Picture (he was also the producer).
Olivier was nominated for Oscars nine more times and was awarded a Special
Oscar in 1979 for "the full body of his work, the unique achievement of his
entire career and his lifetime of contribution to the art of film." Lightly
creased with mid-horizontal fold. Fine condition.
