LAURENCE OLIVIER
Olivier thanks the writer of a "charming letter" for his praise of his performance in Henry IV.
Typed Letter signed: "Lawrence Olivier", 1 page, 5½x9. New York City, 1946 May 14. On letterhead of the Hotel St Regis to Neil Carter, New York, N.Y. Accompanied by original typed envelope. (He must have written the letter in New York and posted it in Britain, since it bears the latter's stamp.) In full: "It was extremely kind of you to write such a charming letter about our performances of 'Henry IV' - Parts I and II. You were very generous in your praise of our work and I want you to know how greatly it was appreciated. With all best wishes". Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) was nominated for Academy Awards for Best Actor in Wuthering Heights (1939), Henry V (1946), Richard III (1956), The Entertainer (1960), Sleuth (1972) and Boys from Brazil (1978), for Best Supporting Actor in Marathon Man (1976) and for Best Director in Hamlet, for which he won the 1948 Academy Award for Best Actor. Oliver performed in over 20 Broadway plays, and many more on London's West End, and won a Tony for The Entertainer (1958). He was married to actresses Jill Esmond, Vivien Leigh and Joan Plowright, the latter from 1960 until his death. Multiple mailing folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
