Price: $300.00
LAURENCE OLIVIER. TLS: "Ever/Larry O', 1p, 5½x7. No place,
1970 June 23. On stationery imprinted with his name to Mr. Dale Olson.
Begins: "My dear Dale," in his hand. In full: "It
was so very good of you to send me such kind words of congratulation. I
am immensely grateful. Thank you so much." Handwritten postscript:
"(Just call me Oliver as usual)". The "kind words of
congratulation" were for Olivier being made a peer in 1970. The actor,
who was knighted in 1947 to become Sir Laurence Olivier, was now Lord
Laurence Olivier. That year, he also co-directed (with John Sichel),
the British film, The Three Sisters, which he had first produced for
Britain's National Theatre in 1967. The play would win 1970-1971 Los Angeles
Drama Critics Circle Awards for Best Production, Best Actress (British
actress Maggie Smith) and Best Designer (Joseph Svoboda). The film version
was released to raise funds for the imperiled National Theatre. British
actor Sir Laurence Olivier (1907-1989) was nominated for Academy Awards for
Best Actor for Wuthering Heights (1939), Henry V (1946),
Richard III (1956), The Entertainer (1960), Sleuth (1972)
and The Boys from Brazil (1978), for Best Supporting Actor for
Marathon Man (1976) and for Best Director for Hamlet, for
which he won the 1948 Best Actor Oscar. Slightly creased. Light
transference of type at lower blank margin. Fine condition.
