LAURENCE OLIVIER. TLS: "L Olivier", 1p, 5x6¾. No place, 1953 September 30. On stationery imprinted with his name to Mrs. Lucas. Begins: "Dear Lukie". In full: "How very sweet of you to wire us on our first night. It was lovely having a thought from you and we are both most grateful. I do hope it won't be too long before we see you again." Likely referring to a performance on the British stage with his second wife, British actress Vivien Leigh (1913-1967), with whom Olivier often appeared on stage and screen. In the year he signed this letter, Olivier also appeared in the film, The Beggar's Opera. Laurence Olivier (1907-1989), Sir Laurence after 1947 and Lord Laurence after 1970, has been called the greatest Shakespearean interpreter and the greatest actor of his time. He won the 1948 Academy Award for Best Actor for Hamlet, which also won Best Picture (he was also the producer). Olivier was nominated for Oscars nine more times and was awarded a Special Oscar in 1979 for "the full body of his work, the unique achievement of his entire career and his lifetime of contribution to the art of film." Lightly creased with mid-horizontal fold. Slightly soiled at upper blank margin and on verso. Fine condition.
