LAURENCE WHISTLER
The English artist quotes from his poem "Flight" on a First Day Cover.
Autograph Poem signed: "By day, jubilate of saints in the heart of the holly,/By night, the cry of the lost in the luminous valley/Laurence Whistler/with good wishes", 8½x4½. First Day Cover in a series honoring Studio Pottery, postmarked Nottingham, October 13, 1987, four British stamps affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. British poet and artist Laurence Whistler (1912-2000) specialized in engraving glass goblets and bowls. As his fame grew, his glass engraving extended to church windows and home panels.A Whistler goblet engraved with a poem by Thomas Campion, originally written for the marriage of a daughter of King James I in 1613, was among the wedding presents bestowed on Princess Elizabeth (the future Queen Elizabeth II) at her marriage in 1947. Here Whistler has written the last two lines of his own two-stanza poem, "Flight." Lightly creased. Pencil note (barely visible) at lower left (not affecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
