LAVINIA STRATTON
Small sheet of ruled paper signed by Lavinia Stratton signed and dated in New York City in 1885 with her name and as "(Mrs Genl Tom Thumb)"
Signature: "Mrs M Lavinia Stratton/(Mrs Gen; Tom Thumb)/New York city/March 14th 1885/ N.Y.". 4½x7, 1 sheet folded, ruled paper. Lavinia Stratton (1841-1919), born Mercy Lavinia Bumpus, was the wife of Charles Stratton (1838-1883), better known as General Tom Thumb. Like her husband, Stratton was a dwarf with normal body proportions. A teacher and dancer before joining P. T. Barnum's circus, she changed her name to Lavinia Stratton and was billed by Barnum as "The Little Queen of Beauty". Later, she married Charles Stratton in an elaborate ceremony attended by over 2,000 guests. The couple was quite famous and was received by many prominent heads of state, including President Abraham Lincoln, Queen Victoria, and France's Emperor Napoleon III. After Charles' death from a stroke, Lavinia married another dwarf, an Italian with the stage name of Count Primo Magri, in 1885. Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
