imprinted coat of arms to Dr. Cornelius Greenway, All Souls Church, Brooklyn,
N.Y. In full: "Thank you for your kind letter of March 26, and your
expression of good wishes. I am most happy to comply with your request. I would
not wish you to pay the postage and I am, therefore, returning the check. With
every good wish I am, sincerely yours in Christ". Lawrence Cardinal Shehan
(1905-1984) was Bishop of Bridgeport (Connecticut) 1953-1961, before becoming
Archbishop of Baltimore, his native city (1951-1984). Before assuming
these posts, he had headed Catholic Charities of America. He issued a
pastoral letter, Racial Justice (1963), and defied threats of
violence to testify in favor of an open housing ordinance that same year. He
wrote an autobiography, A Blessing of Years. Horizontal folds. Fine
