LAWRENCE CLARK POWELL
The UCLA Dean of Library Service and American author writes to friend regarding both professional and personal matters, signs name in black ink
Autograph letter signed: 'Larry" in black ink. 2 pages, 8½x11. Original University of California School of Library Service envelope included. Malibu, California. February 28, 1970. In full: "Dear Connie - That dear Margaret didn't forget! It goes back 15 or 20 years when she had dinner in hour home, saw a few Quimper dishes I had kept from student years in France, & sent to Fay "I'll will you mine." And she did, bless her. It's good of you to offer to pack & keep them in carton or cartons for us. We will be southbound through S.F. about the 20th of April. I am speaking at Davis on the 12th & then will gone on to Red Cliff to visit Fay's 93 yr. old mother, still hale & hearty, & then cross over to state, & down coast via Sea Ranch. Can you give me an idea of the number of cartons? Will be in our Citroen sedan with baggage & one small poodle. Now re the books of children's talks, etc., have you thought of the Dominican College Library, San Rafael? Of course we'd like 'em at UCLA Library School, to which Frances Sayers gave her collection. Margaret & Sister Mary Alma were present at one of our first student convocations, October 1960, & Margaret was always a great supporter of my efforts. Perhaps her Wertsch would overlook her feeling re public institutions in the case of UC & UCLA! Re the long file of Calif. Lib. I'd offer it to the CLA office, now in Sacramento. Well my dear, let me hear from you soon, at your convenience. Yrs. ever". Lawrence Clark Powell (1906-2001) was an American librarian, literary critic, bibliographer and author of more than one-hundred books. Powell studied at Occidental College, later earning his doctorate from the University of Burgundy in Dijon and his Certificate of Librarianship from UC Berkley in 1937. He gained his literary reputation as the University Librarian at the UCLA Library and head librarian at the Williams Andrews Clark Memorial Library from 1944 to 1961, after which he was named the first dean of the School of Library Service at UCLA (later the Graduate School of Education and Information Studies). After retiring in 1966, Powell moved to Tucson where he worked as Professor in Residence for nearly two decades at the University of Arizona and played an instrumental role in the growth of their Graduate School of Library Science. A Lawrence Clark Powell Memorial Lectures is held in Tucson annually in his honor, and the Fay and Lawrence Clark Powell Endowment for Southwest Research continues to support Powell's interest in the geography of the southwest United States. His works include Books: West Southwest: Essays on Writers, Their Books, and Their Land (1957), The Southwest of the bookman (1974), An Orange Grove Boyhood: Growing Up in Southern California, 1910-1928 (1988), and Eucalyptus Fair: A Memoir in the Form of a Novel (1992).
