Verso dated March 3, 1971. LAWRENCE FOSTER (b. 1941) is an American conductor. At the young age of 18, Foster became the conductor of the San Francisco Ballet. He went on to hold various directorial posts for groups such as the  Monte-Carlo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orquestra Simfònica de Barcelona i Nacional de Catalunya, both the Orchestre National de Montpellier and the Opéra National de Montpellier, and, most recently, at l'Opéra de Marseille and the Orchestre philharmonique de Marseille. Although Foster has conducted a wide range of music, he is known for specializing in the interpretation of the works of George Enescu. THE QUARTETTO ITALIANO formed in 1945, making their debut at the Sala dei Mori in Carpi in the same year. The group who signed this album leaf was the permanent company, with Piero Farulli on viola. Touring internationally, the quartet performed in hundreds of concerts over several decades. Esteemed critic Virgil Thomson described them as “The finest string quartet, unquestionably, that our century has known.” Lightly toned. Irregular left edge from being neatly torn from album.
