LAWRENCE G. DERTHICK
Black and white photograph of the U.S. Commissioner of Education,
signed with his best wishes
Inscribed photograph signed: "To Mr. Robert M. Aucall, Jr./with
the best wishes of/Lawrence G Derthick/U.S. Commissioner of Education/Jan. 26,
1960", in blue ink, B/w 5x7. Lawrence G. Derthick (1907-1992)
was the Commissioner of Education from 1956 to 1961, being appointed by
President Dwight Eisenhower. Previously serving as a principal, teacher,
college professor, and superintendent, Derthick's new position was taken at
a particularly tumultuous time, with the ongoing and very controversial
public school desegregation occurring during his tenure. After leaving his
government job, Derthick became associative executive secretary of the
National Education Association. Corners worn and creased, esp. at upper left
margin and lower right corner. Lightly toned. Some areas of writing lightly
faded, but clearly legible. Slight creases. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on
verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
