LAWRENCE DURRELL
Signed First Day Cover of a Christmas stamp
First Day Cover signed: "Lawrence Durrell", 6½x3½. FDC for a 13-cent Christmas stamp, postmarked Boston, Massachusetts, October 27, 1976, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Lawrence Durrell (1912-1990), born in India, was an expatriate British poet and novelist best known for his Alexandria Quartet (1957-1960). Although he worked intermittently for the British Foreign Office, Durrell disliked English customs, and preferred to live in Mediterranean locations: the Greek island of Corfu; Alexandria, Egypt, and France. He was a close friend of novelist Henry Miller. Altogether he wrote sixteen novels, eleven poetry collections, four plays, seven travel books, for books of humor, and many published letters and essays. He reportedly declined a knighthood, believing his right-wing politics might prove an embarrassment. Lightly toned. Fine condition.
