He began his career in his early 20s. Even though he lost his first two amateur fights, Clay-Bey persevered and eventually won the National Golden Gloves in the eight fights that followed. He won a super heavyweight bronze medal at the1995 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Berlin. Subsequently, he knocked out Joe Mesi to win the right to go to the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia and was also Team USA's captain. Somewhat surprisingly, Clay-Bey was eliminated from the tournament in his first fight; his opponent was Wladimir Klitschko, who won by a 10-8 decision, and went on to win the Gold medal. Lawrence turned pro in 1997 and defeated early opponents with great ease, in spite of the fact that they oftentimes had much more experience. In 2003, he fought against Eliecer Castillo, who knocked him down in the 9th round. Fine condition.
