LAWRENCE TURNBULL
The Lawyer from Baltimore handwrites and signs this letter to a Doctor Anckel thanking him for staying in their town and church
Autograph letter signed: “Lawrence Turnbull” in brown ink. 2 pages, 5x6½. September 28, 1912. Robert's Forge, Baltimore. Written on letterhead of La Paix to “My dear Doctor Anckelin full:I am feeling very glad and relieved over the news in this morning's Sun, that you have decided to resist the blandishments of my English cousins, and remain in dear old [illegible] Baltimore. I greatly feared that the lure of Oxford, was about to bereave us of a friend, whose presence here, helps so much to supply that in which we are most lacking, the charm, for which Oxford stands, Mrs. Turnbull and I unite with your Church members, in self congratulations, and in thanks to you for resisting so great a temptation. But really I think you have decided rightly, for Baltimore as missionary ground, offers a greater field of usefulness to such as you, than mellow, cultured old England. Gratefully and sincerely yours”. Lawrence Turnbull (1843-1919) was a lawyer and publisher from Maryland. He married the writer Francese Hubbard Litchfield Turnbull in 1871, and together they established the Turnbull Lectureship on Poetry at the Johns Hopkins University in memory of a son who died in childhood. His daughter, Grace Turnbull was well known as a sculptor. The house called La Paix was designed by J. Appleton Wilson for the Lawrence Turnbull family in 1885. La Paix was destroyed in 1964 and the site now contains St. Joseph's Hospital. Toned. Corners rounded. Horizontal fold across center. Pencil note (unknown hand) on last page. Otherwise, fine condition.
