Autograph Note on Photograph signed: "Leatrice Joy" on photo
(B/w, 8x10.) of Joy as Sui Sen in the silent film A Tale of Two Worlds
(1921). Autograph Note signed on verso: "Leatrice Joy". To
"Dear Mr. Richard Concilla", in full: "Mr. Hergushuma gave me
the definition of Chinese art. So pass it on to my fans & Mrs. Concilla. 'A
wisp for the sky -/A --- dash for the main/Skill to do more/But will to
refrain". Like it? I do too. God bless you. My dearest Mama always told me
'Remember darling - God is always near - and if he isn't - who moved? Hope you
are all well. Sincerely/Leatrice Joy" Silent film star Leatrice Joy
(1893-1985) appeared in comedy shorts with Oliver Hardy (1917) before
getting her first major feature film role, with Mary Pickford in The Pride of
the Clan that same year. By the 1920s she was a major star, cast in Cecil
B. DeMille extravaganzas like The Ten Commandments (1923). She often
played strong, independent women. Her first husband was fellow film star John
Gilbert. Joy had less success in the era of talking pictures, a decline some
attributed to her then unfashionable southern accent. Joy still appeared in
smaller roles, including an appearance with Marilyn Monroe in Love Nest
(1951). Worn. Creased. Toned. Top right corner clipped. Otherwise, fine
condition.
