image, one surface.Photo by James De Kriegsmann of New York and General
Amusement Corp. Castle (1915-1990, born Lee Castaldo in New York City)
was a trumpeter who began playing professional at age 18 with the likes of Joe
Haymes, Artie Shaw, Dick Stabile and Red Norvo, Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller and
Jack Teagarden. He tried forming three bands of his own without success in the
1940s including a Dixieland jazz band in 1949. Castle didn't find success as
a bandleader until joining the Dorsey Brothers' orchestra in 1953, taking over
as bandleader when Jimmy Dorsey took ill and finally died, a role he had
until the 1970s. Lightly toned, creased and bowed, otherwise in fine
condition.
