LEE de FOREST
Unsigned 1955 Western Union telegram from vacuum tube inventor Lee de Forest, thanking the recipient for "Your tribute to my work"
Telegram unsigned. 1 page, 8x5½, on Western Union form. Datestamped April 9, 1955 in black ink. Addressed to Ken Murray, Beverly Hills, California. Message pasted to form in paper strips, in full: "Dear Ken we both enjoyed the picture more than ever Your tribute to my work was terrific The composition was perfection I shall never forget your kind words of commendation Marie joins me in warmest Easter greetings to you and your dear wife = Lee de Forest =". De Forest (1873-1961, born in Council Bluffs, Iowa) patented more than 300 inventions in wireless telegraphy, radio telephony, sound-on-film talking pictures, high-speed facsimile transmission, television, radiotherapy and related areas. One of his most important inventions was the vacuum tube that was used in radios and televisions. He titled his autobiography Father of Radio, but de Forest did not generally receive that recognition. He is regarded, however, as a major contributor to the development of broadcasting. Lightly toned, creased and rippled. Normal printing marks. Light tear in right edge. Adhesive residue on message. Folded once vertically and horizontally and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
