LEE DE FOREST
The inventor responds to a letter saying "I do not believe that it would be a wise use of time to get into the subject you mention in your letter ... Possibly at some later time ...
I may express my views on the subject of true character and greatness."
Typed Letter Signed: "Lee de Forest", 1 page, 8½x11. New York City, New York, 1930 April 16. On letterhead of General Talking Pictures Corporation addressed to Mr. John W. Hughes, Cincinnati, Ohio. In full: "Dear Sir:- Answering yours of the 7th - I do not believe that it would be a wise use of time to get into the subject you mention in your letter by correspondence. Possibly at some later time when I am writing an article for publication I may express my views on the subject of true character and greatness. Yours very truly," Lee de Forest (1873-1961, born in Council Bluffs, Iowa) patented more than 300 inventions in wireless telegraphy, radio telephony, sound-on-film talking pictures, high-speed facsimile transmission, television, radiotherapy and related areas. One of his most important inventions was the vacuum tube that was used in radios and televisions. He titled his autobiography Father of Radio, but de Forest did not generally receive that recognition. He is regarded, however, as a major contributor to the development of broadcasting. Normal mailing folds. Tape at top left corner. Lightly creased. Lightly worn at edges. Otherwise, fine condition.
