LEE DE FOREST
The vacuum tube inventor signed this typed letter to San Francisco's Pony Express on his personalized Lee De Forest Laboratories letterhead in 1945, thanking them for letting him autograph one of his photographs
Typed Letter Signed "Lee de Forest". Pencil notations on verso in unknown hand. 1 page, 8½x11, on de Forest's personalized letterhead as Director of Research at Lee De Forest Laboratories. May 25, 1945. Addressed to Theresa José, Associate Editor of the Pony Express, San Francisco, California. In full: "Dear Miss José: It was quite unnecessary for you to return the $3.00 check as I certainly wanted to pay for those copies. It is a pleasure for me to autograph to yourself and Mr. Hamlin, one of my photographs [not included] and I shall be proud to think of it as hanging on the historic wall of the Pony Express. With best wishes to you, Mr. Hamlin and the Pony Express. Sincerely yours, Lee de Forest LdeF/M". De Forest (1873-1961, born in Council Bluffs, Iowa) patented more than 300 inventions in wireless telegraphy, radio telephony, sound-on-film talking pictures, high-speed facsimile transmission, television, radiotherapy and related areas. One of his most important inventions was the vacuum tube that was used in radios and televisions. He titled his autobiography Father of Radio, but de Forest did not generally receive that recognition. He is regarded, however, as a major contributor to the development of broadcasting. Lightly toned and creased. Discolored near bottom right corner. Folded twice and unfolded. Light tear on right edge near bottom fold. Otherwise, fine condition.
