LEE ELDER
Black and white publicity photograph of the first African-American to play in the Masters (1975)
Photograph Signed: "Lee Elder". B/w 8x10. Lee Elder (1934-2021), who is perhaps best remembered as the first African-American to play in the Masters, has 14 professional wins to his credit. Turning pro in 1959, his best year came in 1978 when he won both the Greater Milwaukee Open and the American Express Westchester Classic. Elder became involved in golf at a young age, frequently cutting classes to work as a caddy and work around the game.  He became a "hustler" and played a match with Joe Louis, who set him up with Ted Rhodes (Louis's instructor) who was able to polish his game enough to enable him to play in tournaments. Drafted into the Army in 1959, he was lucky enough to be sent to Fort Lewis, Washington where he got to play golf regularly. Discharged in 1961, he joined the United Golf Association Tour. In 1967 he attended the qualifying school for the PGA - finishing 9th out of 122. His rookie year (1968), he had a playoff with Jack Nicklaus that went to the fifth hole of sudden death before he lost. Elder was also the first African-American to play in the Ryder cup (1979).Ink stamp on verso. Fine condition.
