LEE MARVIN
He signs an AFTRA contract confirming his 1st star billing credits
Contract signed: "Lee Marvin" in ink under "Accepted" on first page and initialed "LM" on front and four times on verso, 2p, 8½x11, front and verso. New York, N.Y., 1957 January 10. On letterhead of The Theatre Guild to Marvin confirming arrangements for him to appear as a star in a television program. Begins: "You hereby agree to render your personal services to act in the telecast referred to in the attached Standard AFTRA Engagement Contract for a Single Television Broadcast. You will receive 1st co-star billing credits on screen." Typed addition, 8½x1½, affixed at lower right margin of verso. Also signed by a representative of The Theatre Guild, who has also made several ink notations on the contract and initialed next to Marvin's initials. Signed the year that Marvin became a television star with the debut of his series, M Squad. That year, he made several other television appearances, including guest roles on General Electric Theater (January), Studio 57, Climax! and The United States Steel Hour (all in February) and Schlitz Playhouse of Stars (August). He also appeared in one feature film, Raintree County. The epitome of a Hollywood tough guy, Lee Marvin (1924-1987) played mostly supporting parts before his breakout role as Lt. Frank Ballinger on TV's M Squad (1957-1960). He won the Academy Award as Best Actor for Cat Ballou in 1965. Among his other well-known films are The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance (1962), The Dirty Dozen and Point Blank (both 1967) and The Big Red One (1980). Lightly creased, light diagonal crease at Marvin's initials on verso. Staple holes at upper left corner, staples show through at lower left margin, 2 file holes at upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
