Metcalf/M.C. 1st Dist. Montana," in blue ink, 5x3. Lee Metcalf
(1911-1978, born in Stevensville, Montana) was a United States Senator from
Montana from 1961 to his death in 1978. He also became Permanent Acting
President pro tempore of the United States Senate after president pro
tempore Carl Hayden of Arizona fell ill in 1963. He also held this position
until his death. In honor of the senator's life-long service, the state of
Montana established the Lee Metcalf Wilderness, the Great Bear Wilderness,
Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness and the Lee Metcalf National Wildlife Refuge all
in his name. Major Watt Espy (1933-2009) was an American expert on U.S.
capital punishment, known for his database The Espy Files. Created in
collaboration with John Ortiz Smykla, the database recorded executions
administered in the U.S. and preceding territories from 1608 and on. Toned.
