LEE S. MACPHAIL JR. - DOCUMENT SIGNED 02/06/1988 CO-SIGNED BY: ANDRE ROBERTSON, CEDRIC TALLIS - HFSID 271422
Price: $650.00
LEE MacPHAIL, CEDRIC TALLIS and ANDRE ROBERTSON.
Document signed: "Lee MacPhail" as American League President, "Cedric Tallis" twice,
and "André L. Robertson" twice, 6p (integral leaf), 8½x11. No place, circa 1982. Signed on
last page. Robertson signs a contract with the New York Yankees, at an annual salary of
$33,500. Robertson has misdated the contract "6th February [198]8", but this date is
incorrect. Date stamped approval 1982 February 24. LEE MacPHAIL, elected to the
Baseball Hall of Fame by the Veterans Committee in 1998, followed his father Larry
MacPhail, also a successful baseball executive, into the Hall. Lee MacPhail was Director of
Player Personnel for the Yankees, 1948-1958, during which time the Yanks failed only once
to win the pennant. Moving on to Baltimore as President and General Manager
(1958-1965), he helped turn that franchise into a winning dynasty. One of his last moves there
was to pull off one of the greatest trades in baseball history, sending pitcher Milt Pappas to
Cincinnati in exchange for future Hall of Famer Frank Robinson. Next MacPhail returned to
the Yankees as G.M., before capping his career as American League President
(1973-1983) and president of the ML Players Relations Committee. CEDRIC TALLIS
was hired by owner Ewing Kauffman as General Manager of the newly formed Kansas City
Royals in 1968. Following a strategy of drafting young players, and making a series of
shrewd trades, Tallis helped turn the Royals quickly into a contending ball club.
Dismissed, surprisingly, in 1974, Tallis moved to the Yankees, where as General Manager he
watched the Yanks defeat the Royals in three consecutive American League playoffs
(1976-1978). ANDRE ROBERTSON was drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1979
amateur draft but never played for the Jays. Purchased by the Yankees, he played middle
infield, mostly shortstop, for the Yankees (1981-1985). He became the regular Yanks
shortstop in 1983, only to suffer a serious auto accident. That and other injuries shortened his
career. Slightly creased. PSA/DNA authentication label (D91136) in lower left corner of
signature page. Overall, fine condition.
