LENNY WELCH
Rare insight to the pop singer's life of trials and triumphs: "Once I made up my mind that I was going...and nothing was going to stop me, that's exactly what happened."
Typed letter signed: "Lenny Welch" in black ink, 2 pages, 8½x11 (integral). No place, December 16, 1999. To "Ms. Irene M. Walinski", Monson, Massachusetts. In full: "The best advice I can give to your students is to get the best education they can. When I was a child, I was often told that I would never be anything in life. School was of no interest to me because I wasn't happy at home. So, I became a high school drop out at age seventeen. A few years later, I had one of the biggest records in the country. I was on TV, working in Las Vegas, Europe and South America. I was a big star, but then there were no more hit records and life became very difficult again. I had to get a job and work like everyone else. I became a New York City taxi driver. I worked fourteen hours a day and at night I went to school. At the end of the school year, I decided to go to summer school in order to totally be prepared for my GED test. I scored very high on that test. After receiving my GED, I wanted to go to college, but I couldn't afford it. However, once I made up my mind that I was going to go and nothing was going to stop me, that's exactly what happened. I got grants and loans from the college, all the help I needed was right there at the school. I finally got my degree and graduated with honors. Oh yes, I forgot to tell you that I was forty-four years old when I decided to go back to school and forty-eight when I got my Bachelor of Arts Degree. They were some of the best years of my life. take it from me, it's never too late to do what you want to do and don't let anyone or anything stop you from achieving your goals. Now, I entertain all over the world. This year I sang in Russia, Sweden, Poland, England, the Virgin Islands and Mexico. Mrs. Walinski, please tell your students that my life didn't change for the better until I changed my way of thinking. When I started thinking positive, positive things started happening; and when I stopped hating and filled my heart with love, I became very successful and happy. Have a joyous holiday. My sincerest best wishes." American pop singer Lenny Welch was born on May 15, 1938 in New York City, New York. He scored a smash hit in 1964 when his single "Since I Fell for You" placed #4 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. He released five albums Since I Fell for You (1963), Two Different Worlds (1965), Rags to Riches (1966), Lenny (1967) and It's All About Love (2005). Creased at top margin and corners.
