LEO ESAKI. Signature: "Leo Esaki", 5x3 card with ornate border. Japanese-born physicist Esaki made the initial pioneering discovery that opened the field of tunneling phenomena for research. He was at the time with the Sony Corporation, where he performed some deceptively simple experiments that gave convincing experimental evidence for tunneling of electrons in solids and also explained an unforeseen aspect of tunneling in semiconductor junctions. His research led to the development of an important device, called the tunnel diode, or the Esaki diode. Esaki's discovery, published in 1958, opened a new field of research based on tunneling in semiconductors, and the method soon became of great importance in solid-state physics. Esaki was working at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in New York when he shared the 1973 Nobel Prize for Physics (Esaki and Ivar Giaever, of General Electric Co., each received ¼ "for their experimental discoveries regarding tunneling phenomena in semiconductors and superconductors, respectively"; Brian David Josephson, of Cambridge University in the U.K., received ½ of the Prize "for his theoretical predictions of the properties of a supercurrent through a tunnel barrier, in particular those phenomena which are generally known as the Josephson effects." Ink note on verso shows through faintly at blank lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
