LEO GORDON
Signature of the film and TV "bad guy"
Signature: "Leo Gordon/1982", 5x3. Leo Vincent Gordon
(1922-2000) started life as a real life bad guy, receiving an undesirable
discharge from the army during World War II and serving 5 years in St Quentin
for armed robbery. (He would return to St Quentin is an actor to film
Riot in Cell Block 11 (1954). But Gordon turned his life around, reading
nearly every book in the prison library and then studying acting on the GI Bill.
On screen, Gordon continued to play nasty toughs, however: outlaw gang
leader Bill Doolin on Stories of the Century (1954), John Dillinger in
Baby Face Nelson (1957), and the fictional "Big Mike McComb" on multiple
episodes of Maverick. (He would team up with James Garner again in
the feature film of that name, and as a dim-witted bodyguard on four episodes of
The Rockford Files. He played multiple roles on The
Untouchables. When awarded a Golden Boot in 1997, Gordon remarked,
"Thank God for type casting." Gordon was also a scriptwriter,
credited on nearly 50 TV episodes and some feature films, including
Tobruk (1957) and You Can't Win Em All (1970). As a writer, he was
occasionally able to give himself sympathetic roles. Ink note (unknown hand) on
verso. Fine condition.
