ink
Autograph note signed: "To Tommy/All Best wishes/Leon Askin",
in blue ink, 5x3 card with 1½x1½ B/w clipped photo affixed on bottom right
corner.Austrian-born actor Leon Askin (1907-2005), born
Leo Ashkenasy, got his start in Viennese theatre in the late 1920s and 1930s.
However, like many German and Austrian actors, he fled to the U. S. when Adolf
Hitler came to power. He made his first appearance on the New York stage in 1940
and his first TV appearance in 1950. Again, like many Austrian and German
actors, Askin was often cast as a fascist, a Nazi or Communist, despite the fact
that he fled from Hitler's Nazi Germany. Askin appeared in over 130
movies and TV shows between 1950 and 2001. His notable TV roles include
SS General Albert Burkhalter on Hogan's Heroes (1965-1971) and
the voice of Fearless Leader on Rocky and His Friends (1959-1960).
Many of his movie appearances after World War II were in German movies, but
American audiences will probably recognize him from the Bob Hope-Bing Crosby
"Road" movie Road to Bali (1953), Danny Kaye's Knock On
Wood (1954), Billy Wilder's East German-meets-West-German comedy
One. Two, Three (1961), John Goldfarb Please Come
Home (1964) and What Did You Do in the War, Daddy? (1966).
